5 Benefits of Vitamin B12 Shots

More and more, vitamin B12 shots are becoming a health fad. Not too long ago, they came recommended by the doctor and then only for serious B12 deficiencies. Now, with the discovery of the multiple benefits of B12 for the body and overall health, people are opting them into their wellness routine. High energy people, politicians, stars and anyone who is constantly in the public eye and has to look energetic all the time has probably tried them.

Why are vitamin B12 shots getting so popular?

B12 shots

Picture of B12 shots

B12 is a great energy boosters. It works through the red blood cells, by enabling them to carry oxygen more efficiently. An oxygenated cell is a cell that is at its optimum, full of energy and won’t tire easily. B12 is also great for the skin. These are just some of the benefits – overall, it’s an essential vitamin that the body must have to stay in balance. The only problem is that it is not that easily found in food – very few foods are B12 rich and these are essentially meat and eggs. This leaves especially vegans to look for sources elsewhere, in fortified foods, supplements or vitamin B12 shots. Shots are a preferred option because of their direct and immediate absorption into the bloodstream.

So what are the benefits of B12 shots?

  1. B12 increases metabolism, the side effect of which can be weight loss. With regular B12 shots and a combination of other weight loss regimens, people have reported to lose weight much faster and they attribute it to the shot.
  2. B12, as we said earlier is a great energy booster. What better way to deliver an energy booster than directly into the bloodstream? The other option would be to take a supplement, which would take many hours in the digestive process and would lose much value along the way.
  3. Speaking of value, with a B12 shot, you retain almost all the B12 – none of it gets lost in the digestive process. For comparisons sake, a B12 tablet leaves you with only 1.2% of B12 in the tablet. A shot will lose very little, if any.
  4. b12 Shots are highly recommended mood boosters as well. B12 is essential for a properly functioning central nervous system – we know that dysfunction can lead to depression. If you suffer from mild depression once in a while, you can try a B12 shot as a mood booster – some people have reported feeling happily giddy afterwards, but not for long. In a few hours, it settles and you are just happy!
  5. B12 is essential for a properly functioning cardiovascular system. It thins the blood and prevents blood stickiness. Blood cells sticking together is what leads to a blood clot which can cause a stroke.

If you are getting vitamin B12 shots regularly, you’re probably already feeling the tremendous changes it can have on your body. If you’re not yet taking in B12 to boost your diet, or are taking supplements, you should consider the shot. It’s quick, painless and has multiple benefits.

Hi Joan,

To my current knowledge, B12 does not raise blood pressure or cause strokes, however too much of anything can be a bad thing

B-12 shots are safe and easy! Its a water-soluble vitamin which means it moves in and out of your body quickly! If you dont have a reaction b taking a b-complex tablet, then you will not with the shots. You just get ALL of this amazing vitamin

A friend of mine was told to inject B12 into her abdomen, under the skin. Is this safe? I have never heard of the shot being given this way. I always gave them in the butt since a 2 ml shot is easier to absorb in a larger muscle, as opposed to the arm.

I was given a medical intuitive reading and was advised to take a b12 injection once a week.

since it wasn't my doctor who told me this, I wasn't sure how to obtain this, or what dosage.

I went on line and discovered I can order B12 injections. I watched a video on this web site on the administration of the injection to children. It was a sub q injection. Many years ago I worked as a nurse and routinely gave injections but I have been away fro the practice for a long time. My question is are all b12 injections subq and what is the difference between cobalamin and methyl b. Also I am female 110 lbs, so what would a standard dose be?

Thanks

I don't know the medical terms, but I personally was advised to inject 1 ML once a week into a large muscle… Either upper outer quadrant of your butt or your quad muscle. Reasoning being that the vitamin is absorbed more quickly when Injected directly into the larger muscles. I was given 1 and a half inch needles …. Although I have read that if you are really skinny you should use caution so you don't hit bone.

It really varies depending on who you talk to and whatelse you are on. I would talk to your doctor and ask for more info .

Rob November 8, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Painless? I don't know about that! A B12 shot can definitely be felt. The needle isn't the painful part, it's the injection of the medicine itself. It's got a pretty solid sting to it and can leave the injection site sore for an hour or so. It's not intolerable, especially considering the wealth of positive side effects and infrequency of the injection, but don't be misled…this smarts!

Reply

Ray July 5, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Not true. Been injecting myself with 1" needles with no pain.

Reply

E. J. July 19, 2011 at 5:49 am

I totally agree! It actually hurts me for about 10 -15 minutes usually. I inject high and outside on the butt… I find if I inject really slowly it is not as bad afterward. But it is definitely not painless . Lol … Still totally worth it!

Will the use of B-12 shots help to reduce or stop tremors in the elderly? And if so how often would one need them and would it be over a long period of time?

Reply

Chris February 12, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Cora, if there is a b12 deficiency , b12 shots should help reduce the tremors. The dosage would depend on the deficiency levels.

Reply

Brent Allen April 3, 2011 at 3:40 am

Cora,

I have a 84 year old man (who is a former oral surgeon) who I recommended take the B-12 shots. He talked to his doctor and was put on 1 shot a week. He is leaping buildings now! lol He tells me he hasnt felt so good in years! Most tremors are caused by a nerve disorder anyway and b-12 is a major component to the nervous system. Not only that but it makes your blood become more oxygen rich so you get more oxygen delivered to the muscles and organs.

A few years back I was given B12 shots to help combat the effects of diabetes type 2 combined with pre-menopause — weight gain, exhaustion, mood swings etc… Not only did I feel great – I looked great too! I was 45 and lost 40 lbs – the shots put me at 120 lbs and I was thrilled. I'd had a baby at 40 and had not been able to get back to my normal weight. Unfortunately, I moved to NC and have found that, in order to get regular shots, I would have to pay some diet/bariatric doctors $200 a month. Is there another way? I did see the tabs in Costco once – you place them under the tongue, but according to literature I've read – that's not as effective. So, how do we lay citizens get regular, weekly or biweekly B12 shots without paying some doctor a bundle?

Is B-12 the shot and B-12 the pill the same thing??? Do they have the same affects?

Reply

Chris March 22, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Yes, most times they are the same, and the effects are the same. But with B12 shots, you will get the effects faster since its absorbed into the bloodstream easily.

Reply

E. J. July 19, 2011 at 6:00 am

The studies I have read suggest that you only absorb a very small percent of the oral pills where u uptake nearly all of the injectable form. Although they are virtually the same, the injection will far surpass the pill in its benefits.

Reply

Donna November 30, 2011 at 10:39 pm

NO, they do not have the same dosage, trust me I have used both. I have fought fatigue for almost two years. I have take B12 sublingual pills for months at 1500 mcg per day, when I started taking the injections of 1000 mcg per week, the difference was huge. Pills did nothing, only a very small percent was even being absorbed, not enough to do anything. I have more energy now with the injections, I noticed the difference almost immediately. Hope this helps.

Would B-12 help teen depression for a poor eater who is very small and pale and has hand temors?

Yes, they can help to a certain extent, improving overall diet and adding exercise will help more. Depression can be very complex, professional help is best.

B12 might improve the teen depression, but I don't think it would be wise to give the teen the b12 shot especially is they already has an eating disorder, for the b12 shot is often used to speed up weight loss.

It depends on a person's body on both how often you take your shot and the dosage. For example lets say you're just barely over weight then you take your correct dose and probably take it once a week. Some people take it once a week some take it twice a week some even take it once a month. It all really depends and you might want to talk to a doctor for all your questions to get a better explanation.

I'm in Vancouver BC and just started taking the B12 shots. All you need to do is get a prescription from the doc tehn hit up a pharmacy ( its over the counter but you do need an RX to get it) then head back to your docs and get the shot. I bought my vial from Superstore for about $8. The clinic I go to doesn't charge me to inject it. If you have medical coverage it should only cost to buy the vial of B12. Hope it helps

I am a high energetic person and being out like that was just not me! To my amazement last Thursday was one of my better days I am feelng myself. Is the B12 shot? Not sure yet, will I get another, absolutely. Going this Tuesday for another one, which was recommended once to twice per month.

I have noticed my hair isn’t falling out as bad as before and my skin isn’t as dry as before. And energy, after being so fatigued for so long I finally can say I no longer take naps lol. Anyone who uses the injections like me who can not absorb the pill form will notice a wonderful transition in about 3 weeks. Above all else speak freely with your doctor as he or she can be the best provider of any and all medications.

i just got a B 12 shot in my butt the other day. I came in there for my cronic back pain and fibro pain. also have panic disorder and pmdd. I have never had a doctor be so direct, honest and non judgemental. I am 26 years old and no not look like i am in any pain at all. many doctors have not wanted to treat me because of my age and maybe thinking i just want pills to get high. thanks to the people out there that do that by the way!! anyways. in pain for 7 years!!! horrible pain and anxiety. He gave me the shot and within 10 mins my back felt like it was not throbbing or tight! and i felt more relaxed. he did also say i need to have blood work done that usually doctors don't think to give. my ammune system is down and blood pressure is high for my age with always a low grade tempature and faster paluse rate. not too bad though he said. he also gave the right kind of meds for me to help with pain and anxity, also blood pressure med and my zoloft. he gave me 5 refills on all expect of course the pain med and anxeity since it is adictive.

MY POINT HERE IS,he said he will cure me and i will no longer have to be on pain pills..maybe anxity for my ocd but thats it! he wants to get rid of the virus that is fibro and see if there is anything elese wrong with me. VITAMIN B12 WORKS!!! and i just got it one time so far. my only question is how many shots should you geta month or can you get them once eveyother month if it will still be just as helpfull if i went twice a week. it is NOT cheap to see him. 60 bucks with insurance and so new he in not in network yet. PLEASE PEOPLE..tell me anything you know about this and what i should be doing or could be doing more or less of. THANKS FOR READING THIS LOOOONG ASS LETTER!!;)

It shouldnt be $60 for a b12 shot. I went to a place today that does them for $24. The Doctor told me once a week for 6 weeks and then evaluate how many times you need to go from there. She said most people came in every two weeks.
My best friend goes once a week because she has health things going on and has never looked better or been in better health.

I visited my primary physician today and reported that I have been tired lately, he felt it is due to the responsibilities I have as a care-giver. I asked what vitamins he would recommend, and he said to eat nutritious food. Then I said "how about a B-12 shot"…and he said that would probably do me more good and if I felt more energy, I could get another in a month. So…….. as the day has gone by, I HAVE felt more energetic and did a bunch of housework for my Mom…am hoping this is a sign of good things to come!

The first day I have the shot I feel great! but within a couple weeks , before my next shot I feel tired again. I can tell when it is wearing off. I have not lost weight from this shot. My levels have gone up however, my doctor wants me to keep doing this for another three months to see where they go and if if the levels stay elevated. She explained to me that I feel tired because the levels will fluctuate. I will say I think it has helped. I didnt realize how tired I was until I started getting this shoot and my energy began to boost. It can take between 3-6 months to feel the effect and some people say they cannot tell any difference. I think it just depends on the person.

Thanks,

Brenda

It takes about six months for you feel any effect from the shots. It is a slow process especially if you are suffering from pernicious anemia like I am but in the long term it keeps me alive.

I keep reading how in some people b12 can cause blood clots. But I can't find how rare that is or even why it happens. Does anyone know why?

I’ve had a couple of B-12 shots in the past and it didn’t seem to do anything for me. No extra energy or anything. How often should you get them?

I read an article where Vitamin B12 is used for elderly with memory loss. Do you think this would help my father who’s recently had a sudden memory loss?

It wouldn't hurt him if he tried it. I give them to my son for autism

Can I purchase injection kits if I don’t have access to a dr’s office? Or do I need an Rx?

You can purchase kits. But it may be good to see your doctor first.
